In recent years, Low Temperature Cofired Ceramics (LTCC) have become an attractive technology for electronic components and substrates that are compact, light, and offer high-speed and functionality for portable electronic devices such as the cellular phones, personal digital assistants (PDA) and personal computers used for wireless voice and data communication in rapidly expanding mobile network systems. LTCC are especially suitable for the high frequency circuits required for high-speed data communications.

LTCCs are made by combining ceramic insulating materials, conductor materials, and other materials through numerous processes culminating in co-firing. The materials and the processes used are therefore interdependent. By ensuring the consistency between materials and processes, it is possible to achieve circuit boards and various types of high frequency passive components and so on with the desired characteristics. This book describes the general technical information of each material (ceramic, conductor, and resistor materials) and each process, and it offers commentaries on unique examples resulting from these interrelations.

He earned his bachelor’s degree from Tsinghua University in China before coming to the United States for his PhD and to pursue his career in the financial industry. Not what I was looking for!

I was very disappointed with this book if you can call it a book. It is more like an essay that can be read in one hour. This book is very abrupt difficult to follow due to the lack of details. When I read a book I want to learn something from it but with this work I came away empty handed. We all know that Darwin's survival of the fittest theory personifies wall street to the tee. Yes, it is brutal unfair but so is the nature of this beast.

Wall street experience, almost naked.

This book is quite unique, at least the only one that I know of its kind. Here is why:

1. Chen gives a good amount of details of his career path. His education in China, job interview experience, office politics and most importantly, how hard he worked and what he thought. But I don't think he provided enough details tho (especially the very first and last of his 10 years). Please read on.

2. Chen doesn't hide his motivations or emotions. For example, the author explicitly said he wanted a more "glamorous" career than doing research even before he came to the US for his PhD. This is different from a lot of people who on day 1 really loved Physics and took quant jobs without a blink on day 2. Also, Chen repeatedly expressed his desire for money and respect/power. I am not saying this is good or bad but this is the real wall street. Despite of some's wish, wall street hasn't been centered around protecting people who buy iPhone 4's but default on their mortgages yet.

However, Chen's writing gets more and more obscure from chapter to chapter especially after he joined "Imperial Bank". To some degree, this book becomes a prop trading version of "Beautiful Mind" as the author's promotion speculations were almost completely based on rumors and what A said in phone conversation to an unknown B or a joke C made while talking to D. Promotion into a management role in less than 1 year is rather rare in most places especially before one finishes one's very first project.

What further puzzled me is how the author ended up being fired days after being considered as a candidate for a senior management role. IMHO, why couldn't Chen just go back to his cash cow high frequency trading strategy as a trader in "Turret" or continue his ETF project which he was hired for by "Imperial Bank". I am not saying this is not realistic or impossible. I am just hoping the author could have devoted more pages on these issues. This is why I am giving 4 stars not 5 to this book.

A very interesting read. He is honest about his feelings over the 10 years which is refreshing ( he wants to hit it big both in terms of $ and power and doesn't hide from admitting this ) because a lot of people on wall street try to make it seem like they are doing social work.

But definitely, as the previous reviewer mentioned, some of the details seemed to be lacking. Maybe the author is a genius but some of the promotions or almost promotions seemed EXTREMELY fast. Unless your Einstein and making tons of money from Day 1, what could
one do to justify promotions of that proportion that quickly ? Also, the Mid-Century ending was glossed over and not made clear. As far as I know, if you're successful at Mid-Century, you're handsomely rewarded so why leave ? But overall, still a really interesting book that's hard to put down. Highly recommended.

Lord includes a crucial, tragically ironic drama Cameron couldn't fit into the film: the failure of the nearby ship Californian to save all those aboard the sinking vessel because distress lights were misread as random flickering and the telegraph was an early wind-up model that no one wound.

Lord's account is also smarter about the horrifying class structure of the disaster, which Cameron reduces to hollow Hollywood formula. No children died in the First and Second Class decks; 53 out of 76 children in steerage died. According to the press, which regarded the lower-class passengers as a small loss to society, "The night was a magnificent confirmation of women and children first, yet somehow the loss rate was higher for Third Class children than First Class men." As the ship sank, writes Lord, "the poop deck, normally Third Class space ... was suddenly becoming attractive to all kinds of people." Lord's logic is as cold as the Atlantic, and his bitter wit is quite dry.

The Best Account of the Lot.

This is a well-written, short, honest, and to-the-point recounting of the sinking of the Titanic in 1912. It was written long enough ago for Walter Lord to interview a decent sample of survivors' accounts directly from informants and not from sensational newspaper reports of the period. There's just enough technical detail about the engines and structure of the ship to satisfy an ordinary reader, if not a marine engineer. An appendix fills in even more detail and statistics.

The book is, how should I put this?, "polite." Nobody is blamed or demeaned openly, with only one or two exceptions, and those only by implication. Bruce Ismay, one of the executives of the White Star Line, was evidently a big pain in the ass. A couple of myths are done away with.

Almost as interesting as the disaster itself, in which some 1500 people died, is Lord's description of the customs of the time regarding social class. "Women and children first." Correct, except that the highest percentage of women and children saved were from first class, the next highest percentage from second class, and the least from third class passengers in steerage who were mostly poor immigrants. Everyone cares about the unsinkable Molly Brown but nobody hears about a hypothetical Paddy O'Reilly who made a living digging clods of peat out of the bogs and hardly had a shoe to his foot.

The calamity has been committed to celluloid several times, including a German version from the 1940s in which the hero is a German. The first well-known rendering, from the early 50s, stars Kenneth Moore as Second Officer Lightoller as the rational and efficient central figure. He wasn't as compassionate in real life, according to Lord's version. He interpreted "women and children first" as "women and children only",. so some boats were lowered with spaces left over.

It's a good film, though, and sticks most closely to Lord's book. Another film, the Hollywood "Titanic", appeared about the same time, as much a disaster as the actual sinking. Avoid it. Cameron's smash movie, the most recent "Titanic," is the most expensive and splashy, so to speak. Those are its only redeeming features.

Read this book instead.

MOST DEFINITELY A NIGHT TO REMEMBER...

First published in 1955, time has not diminished the power of this classic account of the final hours of the Titanic to capture the imagination and interest of the reader. It was turned into an award winning hit movie of the same name in the late 1950s.

Not only is the book a well-written, riveting account of the Titanic's final hours, it also tells the personal stories of some of the passengers and crew members that survived that harrowing time. It is also a peek into a bygone time, that of the Edwardian era, when class distinctions were more marked and the concept of women and children first prevailed.

Although the story of the Titanic is a tragic one, out of its debacle arose improved shipboard safety, and the practice of having enough lifeboats to accommodate all passengers became the standard. No longer would an ocean going vessel ever market itself as unsinkable.

This is a marvelous book that those with an interest in the Titanic Or stories of survival will love. I was positively riveted from start to finish.

most who read this book will already have a good grasp of what actually happened

At the time it was written this book was heralded as an instant class and considered to be the definitive account of that tragic night. Given that it was written in the 1950's, it is clear why it was so highly regarded. Mr. Lord was able to interview numerous survivors, a luxury that modern day historians don't have. Of course, much has been learned about that night since this book was published. Additionally, the films and documentaries have captured the imagination of many and, it is likely, most who read this book will already have a good grasp of what actually happened. That all having been said, I found it to be a riveting account that seemingly went minute-by-minute. Equally as interesting are some of the characters whose antics are described in the book. For anyone who has at least a mild interest in the Titanic, this book is well worth reading.

Great book for practical statistics in crop science!

I like this book, because it discusses some of the nuts and bolts of basic statistical analysis for crop science, as well as supplying the formulas for the statistical parameters. I would recommend this book for graduate students or researchers looking for a useful description of common experimental designs, statistical tests such as regression analysis, anova, and basic analysis of covariance. As with any statistics textbook meant for general readership, it will be a little above the capabilities of someone without any background in statistics and a little inadequate for those who are heavily invested in detailed statistical analysis, but I think it covers a nice middle ground in the literature. It would be nice if the next edition had an appendix of the basic formulas that are used commonly in the book so that there would be a more ready reference.

Easy to read

The authors partition topics well into easy-to-read sections, which is nice if you don't want to read long passages at a time. It provides information on a number of methods that were not covered in my intro plant experimental design class, so it should be useful later as a reference.

Educational and Fun - Best Quick Read for Every College Student

I use San Bolkan's book, So You Are Going to College, for all of my college courses. It creates a great fun and fast supplemental reading that the students can relate to and it is a way for them to learn important lessons. I have had students scoff on the first day when I tell them about one more book they have to buy (& read)--but when I tell them I will buy it from them if they don't like the book they are floored...and I have yet to have to write any checks to back up my guarantee. :) Bottom line, I have assigned this book to over 500 college students, given it to family friends graduating from high school, and read it numerous times myself for class discussion. It only gets positive reviews and it always leaves the reader wanting more of San Bolkan's writing.

A comedic, informative, & easy read =]

This book is a great way to introduce students to college, its expectations, and ways to be prepared.

There are TONS of books out there which aim to inform collegians about, "how to help themselves," or "do school the right way," but let's face it...most of those are BORING.... THIS ONE is NOT.. its quite the opposite.

its cheap, funny, informative, AND YOU'LL ACTUALLY WANT TO READ IT.

The book reflects the author's experience across more than forty years in assessing and forming policy about nuclear weapons, mostly at senior levels close to the centre both of British governmental decision-making and of NATO's development of plans and deployments, with much interaction also with comparable levels of United States activity in the Pentagon and the State department. Part I of the book seeks to distill, from this exceptional background of practical experience, basic conceptual ways of understanding the revolution brought about by nuclear weapons. It also surveys NATO's progressive development of thinking about nuclear deterrence, and then discusses the deep moral dilemmas posed - for all possible standpoints - by the existence of such weapons. Part II considers the risks and costs of nuclear-weapon possession, including proliferation dangers, and looks at both successful and unsuccessful ideas about how to manage them. Part III illustrates specific issues by reviewing the history and current policies of one long-established possessor, the United Kingdom, and two more recent ones, India and Pakistan. Part IV turns to the future, examines the goal of eventually abolishing all nuclear armouries, and then discusses the practical agenda, short of such a goal, which governments can usefully tackle in reducing the risks of proliferation and other dangers while not surrendering prematurely the war-prevention benefits which nuclear weapons have brought since 1945.

About the Author

Michael Quinlan entered the UK Home Civil Service in 1954. He was Private Secretary to the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Air 1956-58, and to the Chief of the Air Staff 1962-65. From 1968 to 1970 he was one of the Directors of Defence Policy in the Ministry of Defence and from 1970 to 1973 Defence Counsellor in the UK Delegation to NATO in Brussels. After a spell in the Cabinet Office he returned to the Ministry of Defence as Deputy Under-Secretary of State from 1977 to 1981. After service as a Deputy Secretary in the Treasury and then as Permanent Secretary in the Department of Employment he returned to the Ministry of Defence as Permanent Under-Secretary of State from 1988 to 1992. From 1992 to 1999 he was Director of the Ditchley Foundation, which runs a wide-ranging and high-level programme of international conferences. In 2007 he co-authored with General Lord Guthrie a short book on the Just War tradition for Bloomsbury.
