The Green Letters: Principles of Spiritual Growth, by Miles J. Stanford

As the first book in a series of five on the Christian life, The Green Letters emphasizes both the doctrinal and experiential aspects of maturing in Christian living. The book is grounded in Scripture and enlivened by quotations from noted authors. "Not I, but Christ" is its theme. The author makes this arresting statement regarding the dynamics of the Christian life: "God . . . doesn't intend to help us live the Christian life. Immaturity considers the Lord Jesus a Helper. Maturity knows Him to be life itself." Perhaps the greatest drama in the world is the slow and subtle growth of character in the Christian. Beauty of character can be developed only through years of reflection and experience in the Word of God as the life of Christ is increasingly lived by faith. The Christian life is a healthy, robust kind of life. It advances also through trials, for in one who has faith even suffering is not wasted, but becomes a means for increasing spiritual vigor and strength.

small book with lots of content
By MPS
I was surprised by how much I got out of this little book. I'm actually reading it for the second time. It's no fluff, just meat. The author uses many examples from the realm of nature (ie trees, seeds) to help explain some Christian concepts that are pretty hard to grasp otherwise. If you are looking for a light read this is not it. But the chapters are short with lots to think about. Could be used like a devotional book, reading one chapter a day. The language style is old, but is well worth the effort made to understand.

The main problem with MJS's teachings
By J. Moore
The main problem is that too few Christians know of the Pauline basis for these teachings (Stanford's Calvinistic comments could well have been left outside, though, even if one agrees with them) and so do not give them to the younger believers who most need to hear them. I know Stanford addresses this in one of his articles, saying that these teachings may be beyond the understanding of the young in Christ. Perhaps. But I'd have rather had them told to me up front than to have suffered in the mental and spiritual AGONY of wondering why I still sinned, was I in fact saved, etc. Even if I did not "get it" I believe I would have at least recognized it as Pauline truth and would have slowly grown into it eventually.

Young believers are done a grave disservice by not being told exactly who and what they now are in Christ. An equal disservice is not telling them the flipside: that the old sin nature is not gone but will very much dwell within them for life, just as Paul said, yet victory in Christ IS still possible in their daily walk. Tell them these things UP FRONT so they are not blindsided and discouraged by nothing more than plain ignorance used as a club in the hand of the devil. Of course, the reason they're not told is because most OLDER Christians are just as ignorant of it.

Whatever you do, start out the young knowing exactly what "position vs. condition" means. Explain what Paul meant by reckoning. By the grace of God they'll grow faster, stronger and straighter in the Faith than they otherwise would have done, left to figure it out on their own as I was.

Reply to Kirk Bozeman
By A. Sun
A friend and I talked about Mr. Bozeman's comment via email. His reply to me was truly great and I thought I would share it here. Please note that his comment was not written to be read by anyone but me, so I apologize for his direct and somewhat confrontational language and format. AS

Stanford had some very narrow, "old-school" Dispensational views not held by the mainstream of scholars today (at least the ones I've seen),
(This is an absolutely accurate assessment of Miles' dispensational understanding. His is a classic, Lewis S. Chafer, C. H. Mackintosh, John N. Darby, Patrick Fairbairn dispensational approach to Biblical interpretation. That is not what the current staff of Dallas Seminary or its recent graduates are teaching and following. Theirs is usually called Progressive Dispensationalism.)

and it shows in the way he understood Paul (especially) and the whole of Scripture in light of his writings, and is the undercurrent for this book.
(Again, absolutely true; however, the book is a compilation of letters from his file on subjects that he repeatedly addressed in answer to inquiries from people world-wide who wrote to him for clarification and Biblical understanding.)

(This is more evident in the "Complete" version, but not as evident in the "slim" version, which I feel is a bit deceptive to the reader, since the "slim" is more widely-read.)
This statement is purely based on ignorance. The "slim" version is the first book that Miles wrote in this series under the title Principles of Spiritual Growth. It was a grand primer for a new Christian. Later, that was expanded to The Green Letters, a broader set of letters in answer to more questions than were addressed in Principles of Spiritual Growth. Yet another book was issued called The Red Letters. Those were all combined by the publishers into The Complete Green Letters. Miles originally had his small books printed in Hong Kong and distributed entirely out of his small home office.

Whatever you do with this fact, (The only "fact" that he has mentioned is that Stanford does not embrace the Progressive Dispensational interpretation, but accepts and teaches the Darby, Mackintosh, Newell, Chafer interpretation)

the practical outworking of this ideology ("This ideology" begs for definition. On the surface it appears to mean `that dispensational understanding of the Brethren who defined it' compared with the understanding that is now taught and adopted by more recent teachers and preachers. For practical purposes that would be staff additions at DTS after Chafer's death and others who hold to the ideology of Progressive Dispensationalism, Covenant/Reformed/Calvinistic/Historical Dispensationalism as compared to Doctrinal Dispensationalism as an interpretive system)

for Stanford results in a very unbiblical view of sanctification (which may be defined by . . .?)

that makes it difficult to reconcile (The writer should have added; "that makes it difficult for me to reconcile)

many New Testament passages. It is difficult for me at this point to believe that the apostle Paul would have instructed believers to walk the way that Stanford does: the classic "let go and let God" mentality. (What does the writer object to about "let go and let God"?)

Stanford dresses this in very intelligent writing, drawing a very attractive, powerful picture of his "system". But, pretty as it may be, I now believe this line of thinking to be unbiblical. (He has made a serious claim without example or definition; or, as a lawyer might say; `based on facts not in evidence.')

This kind of teaching (Again, a claim without definition that must be taken as any form of "let go and let God" do His work in you.)

can lead believers to self-deception, replacing repentance, active faith, and active seeking of God with a "seated-in-heaven-spirituality" that is not allowed to examine itself, bordering on perfectionism and deep-seated in esoteric "breaking" experiences that simply will not happen in the life of every believer. (Miles Stanford taught throughout his life and ministry that the Believer's life and walk started with his union with Christ in His death [Romans 6] and his resurrection to new creation life in the risen Jesus. Further, that the source of his life here moved from Earth to Heaven when the Lord ascended 10 days prior to Pentecost and the descent of the Holy Spirit. His life in the Grand Assembly began on Pentecost with the indwelling Holy Spirit, who had positionally sanctified forever the believer from the world and into Jesus the moment he believed, and who now indwells every Believer accepted in the Beloved. Now that I am accepted and forgiven, and that my sins are forgotten forever; it would be more than foolish for me to believe that any thought or act of `repentance' on my part would, or could, move God to do what more on my behalf? All has been done! For the Lord said on the Cross, "It is finished.")

"Active faith"--does that, can that mean anything other than faith which emanates from within oneself? Was it my faith that actuated the grace of God that saved me, or was it the faith of the Only Begotten Son of God in the will of the Father that moved in my life to bring me to salvation? Most assuredly, as Miles himself taught me, it was the will of the Father and the faith of the Son who wrought my salvation in the eternal counsels of the past. So, I have been seated "in Him" since before the foundations of the world. John, in his first general epistle, begs us to clear thinking on this, as he states; "he who says he has no sin deceives himself."

"Active seeking of God"--There is that word "active" again; this time attached to "seeking of God." It appears to mean that there is within man some capacity to turn one's self towards God and `actively' attempt to find and reach Him. If Scripture is to be believed, `there is none righteous, no not one' [Romans 3] and `there is not the [man] that understands, there is not one that seeks after God' [Romans 3:11 Darby]. The alternative to self-searching, self-seeking, pursuit of God is to stop! And, then let God wrap you in His arms at the feet of the risen Savior in Heaven, from where your life flows in torrents of living water; sustaining you until that moment when He comes and claims His Bride and removes Her to the Marriage Supper of the Lamb.

"Not allowed to examine itself?"--A pitiful bit of fiction at best, an attempt to distract from central issues, perhaps; a failure to read what Miles Stanford consistently wrote, or the expression of one already committed to the Armenian view that man has within him the ability to lay hold of God and claim his salvation based on his self-assessment and relative remorse and repentance. Miles' life was a series that consisted of the Hound of Heaven, hunting him down, finding him out, and dragging him from the mire of brokenness, onto the ground of peace. He cautioned us repeatedly that becoming self-absorbed took us deeper into the woods and away from the light of instruction and growth. That would lead, said he, to self-inflicted pain, and discipline by a loving Father. Better to examine yourself (the very essence of the Lord's Table) to make sure that what you testify to before your brothers and sisters in Christ is your soul bared and His righteousness appropriated.

Be careful with this book! Don't forget that the same Paul who said, "you were made to die to the Law... to bear fruit for God" also said "I beat my body and make it my slave". Again, the same Paul who wrote so much concerning our certainty of and blessing from being "in Christ" said that he was still striving to be found Him, still striving to be conformed to His death, and still striving to be conformed to His resurrection. (But, you missed the point that he was striving against himself, against the Old Sin Nature within to which he died in Christ through union, the conformity that he wished to attain, as so with the resurrection to new creation life of which Christ was the "First fruit")

There is no lack of certainty of heaven or of being presently "in Christ" here in Paul's statements. They simply point to the reality that (Practical or conditional) sanctification is a process that MUST BE "worked out" through faithful obedience as God "works in". It doesn't just happen by "reckoning" once we "get to the end of ourselves" as "The Green Letters" describes. (Thankfully, once I `got to the end of my self by realizing that I died to sin and self, then my Position in Christ became by condition in life through declaring myself to be dead to the power of sin in my life [blessed Reckoning) free from the Law of sin and death, and free to serve God by considering (Reckoning) my life to be expendable in service of my savior--just as my late mentor was finally able to drive into my aging brain. I thank Miles J. Stanford, who is as important to our age and day as was Martin Luther to the Reformation.

There are better books out there
By A Customer
This book is descent but a poor substitute in light of better alternatives, namely Zar's Biostatistical Analysis or Sokal and Rohlf's Biometry. Zar's book is my favorite. I am not as familar with Sokal and Rohlf's but know enough that I prefer the organization and context of Zar. The limitations of Steel et al. is the needless use of matrix algebra, the lack of calculations in many cases (instead, the linear model is presented without decomposition into formulas), the brief discription for many of the analyses, lack of good examples, and difficult to follow writing. On the positive side, Steel et al. have a chapter on experimental design, which Zar and Sokal and Rohlf lack, although it is not an easy chapter to follow. My recommendation is to use Zar as your primary "go to" reference on biostatistics.

Great tool for the Educator
By Dr. Steven Martin
I found that Steel et al. covered a broad range of methodology needed for biological research, and that the scope of this text is comparable to any statistical manual available. It is very functional as a reference material for troubleshooting any design or analysis problems. As a professor of research methodology, I highly recommend consulting this text for improving the statistical analysis of biological research.

An average statistics book that takes examples from biology
By Alexander C. Zorach
I found this book somewhat disappointing. I found the book to be a run-of-the-mill statistics book that just happens to draw examples from Biology as opposed to other areas. The book is perfectly usable, but in my opinion, falls somewhat short of its intended purpose.

As statistics books go, this book is above average, but it is still not the clearest book out there. I do like the inclusion of example data within the book, but often the mathematics is not presented in the clearest way. I think there are a number of better statistics books out there, books that take the reader to a more advanced level while being easier to read. My favorite book that in my opinion achieves these goals is "Mathematical Statistics and Data Analysis" by John Rice.

I also would have appreciated much more discussion of biology. The authors do not do a good job of communicating what makes the application of statistics to biology special. There are important distinctions between the application of statistics in biology and its application in other fields, in terms of the usefulness of various techniques, and the sorts of problems and complications that arise. It is clear that the "biometrical approach" influenced the authors' choice of topics, but I wish they had more explicitly discussed how the mathematics relates to concepts and phenomena that are specific to biology. This potential connection to biology was the main reason I picked up this book, and I was quite disappointed to find that the connection wasn't developed to the degree I had expected.

The Chronicle of Lord Nobunaga (Brill's Japanese Studies Library), by ta Gyichi. J.S.A. Elisonas J.P. Lamers

Shinch-K ki, the work translated here into English under the title The Chronicle of Lord Nobunaga, is the most important source on the career of one of the best known figures in all of Japanese historyOda Nobunaga (1534-1582), the first of the Three Heroes who unified Japan after a century of fragmentation and internecine bloodshed. The other two of the triad, Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1537-1598) and Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543-1616), also make frequent appearances in this chronicle, playing prominent although clearly subordinate roles. So the chronicle also is an important source on their early careers, as it is on a constellation of other actors in Japans sixteenth-century drama. The chronicles author, ta Gyichi, was Nobunagas former retainer and an eyewitness of some of the events he describes. He completed his work about the year 1610.

Review
Experts on early modern Japanese history will welcome this book, while more casual readers may find it a bit dense for their passing entertainment. Nobunaga is very probably the least well known of the three giant figures (with Hideyoshi and Tokugawa) of later-16th-century Japan who set in motion the events that produced a unified country under the Tokugawa family's leadership after 1600. Helpful scholarly aids and refinements fill the volume. The translation is clear, the footnotes are substantive, and the supporting text analyses are often fascinating. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Graduate students and scholars. -- R. B. Lyman Jr., emeritus, Simmons College, "Choice" January 2012

A needed addition to medieval Japanese history
By Bdgold
This work marks a significant contribution the field of Japanese history. Hitherto there have been good translations of war tales and memoirs covering most of the samurai era. These ranged from from The Tale of Heike in the early medieval to Remembering Aizu in the early modern. Sadly the Warring States period (sixteenth century Japan) represented one major gap. There are of course numerous histories from this era (produced primarily in the early Edo period). However, these works have remained inaccessible to English speaking audiences. While The Chronicle of Lord Nobunaga is not the literary tour de force of Heike monogatari, this translation is fluid, accessible, and authentic in its overall tone. The subject of the work, Oda Nobunaga, is also of course one of the most important figures of the sixteenth century. This book represents the most detailed treatment of Nobunaga in English. This is probably one of the most important translations of the past ten years for premodern field.

The overall story, insight, and excitement make up for the boring parts. Sections can be extremely sad/morose. Violent.
By bloopetybloop
"This is a world where the young die first, leaving their elders behind, where the morning glory does not last until nightfall. Ours is an existence ephemeral as a dayfly's."

Ōta Gyūichi's Shinchō kōki, translated by JSA Elisonas and JP Lamers as The Chronicle of Lord Nobunaga, offers a deep and unique insight into life in 16th century Japan, particularly life as a member of the nobility. At times the writing itself is poetic, fast-paced, and full of imagery while at others it's monotonous, gruelingly detailed, and morbid. Throughout the work, it's obvious that Gyūichi poured his heart and soul into writing a factual chronicle as best he could, not an embellished fairytale. While there is an apparent bias in his writing - he praises his former feudal Lord at every opportunity - he doesn't fail to recount instances of extreme brutality and questionable actions taken by Nobunaga. Still, he almost entirely refrains from adding his own analyses, assumptions, and opinions. What remains are mostly facts.

The translation is beautiful. The footnotes are astoundingly detailed and well-researched. Elisonas and Lamers have included an informative preface, timeline of events, and introduction as well as fifteen maps and an index. It's hard to think of anything else they could have done to make this a more complete experience.

The content of this chronicle is not for the faint-hearted. The savagery and relentless disregard for human life documented herein is overwhelming. While there are meticulously detailed accounts of sumo matches, parades, falconry, festive gatherings, gift-giving, construction projects, and tea ceremonies along with anecdotes of generosity, kindness, and hospitality, the majority of this work deals with Nobunaga's scorched-earth military conquests and the unspeakable atrocities that surrounded his life.

That being said, there's nothing else out there in the non-fiction realm that's quite like The Chronicle of Lord Nobunaga and I highly recommend it to anyone who's willing to trudge through a thick history book in order to transport themselves several hundred years back in time to feudal Japan.

Michael Maclear is a Canadian, and wrote this book from a non-American perspective. As such, it offers an objective view of America's involvement in Southeast Asia and the Vietnam War. I cannot recommend this book more strongly for anyone who wants a comprehensive understanding of one of America's darkest moments.

A Canadian view of the French and American Wars in Vietnam...
By John P. Jones III
Michael Maclear is a Canadian journalist and filmmaker. Although his country was not involved in the war, other than serving as a place of refuge for those Americans who did not want to participate, he, and his Japanese wife developed their own obsession with it, which spanned a couple of decades, and including numerous stays in Vietnam. He waited the proverbial "decent interval" after the war, certainly for a journalist, to relate what happened. The book was published in 1981. The title, though a convenient round number, understates the period of the war(s) covered by more than a couple of years; it was from the defeat of the Japanese occupying forces (and their French Vichy collaborators) in 1945, until North Vietnamese tanks rolled through the Presidential Palace in Saigon in 1975.

As Maclear indicates in the introduction, the book is primarily about the American War. In 350 pages, only the first 50 are devoted to the French involvement, until the fall of Dien Bien Phu. The author conducted numerous interviews with the participants, from the high-level policy makers to the "grunts" who fought the war on the ground. Though I have read numerous books on the war, and did my own year, "on the ground," I found much new and unique material in this excellent account. Maclear sets the tone of his book early on in the introduction: "The interviews with the senior policy-makers reveal an ignorance of, or a withholding of facts that were always available. Motives and objectives are no clearer now than at the time: indeed, they are often shown as non-existent. And so the rationale for the sacrifice thins."

The work commences with Major Archimedes Patti of the OSS - Office of Strategic Services - the forerunner to the CIA, who was in Vietnam in 1945, encouraging resistance to the Japanese occupation. The principal entity that is fighting on the side of the Americans is led by, yes, Ho Chi Minh. Among the material that I found new, was Patti citing President Roosevelt, as saying in 1943: "that Americans would not be dying in the Pacific tonight if it hadn't been for the short-sighted greed of the French and the British and the Dutch. Shall we allow them to do it all, all over again?" Yes, there was the very real option of establishing short-term protectorates after WW II, as a prelude to independence. Instead, we allowed the defeated colonial powers to assume control of their colonies, necessitating "wars of liberation" by the inhabitants, including the longest one, Vietnam.

Maclear follows a now very familiar parabola (at least for me) from the Marines landing on the beaches at Da Nang, in 1965, through the troop built-up to 500,000 plus, and hitting so many of the "touchstones" of the war along the way, from "search and destroy" missions, the Tet offensive, the battle for Hue and Khe Sanh, My Lai, the bombing and invasion of Cambodia to the final denouement commencing with the collapse of ARVN forces in the Central Highlands in 1975. Two of the interviewees that Maclear heavily draws upon are Tim O'Brien of The Things They Carried fame, as well as several other books, and Jim Webb, of Fields of Fire, and several others, fame. Webb is served as US Senator from Virginia.

Time and time again, Maclear demonstrates a true understanding of the actual events in the country, and the attitude of the participants, particularly the "grunts." He relates their "Fort Apache" attitude when they were on patrol, and all civilians were seen as "hostiles." He knew of the "Coke girls," 9 and 10 year old Vietnamese girls who would follow around, and sell cold Cokes to the GI's. He relates a couple anecdotes that underscored how the American Army was disintegrating under the strain of the impossible position it was placed in. For example, he quotes Senator Eugene McCarthy: "I'm inclined to believe that the war would have ended just about when it did, even if there had been no protest, if I had not campaigned, because they didn't end it on policy finally: they just ended it because they were losing it, and - you know- the soldiers wouldn't fight." And related to what was called the battle of "Hamburger Hill": "With general morale near zero, and with at least 500,000, or nine-tenths of the US force as rear-echelon and preferring it that way, the US military command order what Congressmen called `an absolutely senseless' offensive in the A Shau valley...The public fury in the United states was such that Defense Secretary Melvin Laird had to rebuke openly the military command...(there was) a $10,000 bounty of Lieutenant-Colonel Weldon Honeycutt, the officer who ordered and led the attack....the bounty for the life of the Lieutenant -Colonel was not unique except for the amount. There were bounties ranging from $50 to $1000 offered for the killing of unpopular officers." Our "troubled Army in Vietnam" as Newsweek' cover once proclaimed.

The only point that I (strongly!) disagree with was Maclear's estimate that over two-thirds of the troops who had been in Vietnam were designated as requiring psychological care. Hum! But overall, Maclear got it all so right. 5-stars, plus.

Opportunity Lost
By Michael Bousfield
When I first read this book I had little knowledge of the real politiks that were being played out and the reasons why.
However, on completion I came to the conclusion that the USA had missed a golden opportunity to secure Vietnam as a loyal ally amongst the Asian dominos.
The irony of the whole affair was reinforced in this most informative analysis. What if the US decided to recognise Hoh and his government and ignore the French. It must have come oh so close. While Hoh was a member of the Communist party he was ultimately a nationalist who openly recognised and respected the democratic ideals of the USA. Hoh's numerous (and most polite) written entreaties to Truman and his use of the American declaration of independence go further to support this assumption.
Billions of $ were invested by the US supporting the French in the French-Indochina war and then during their own conflict in Vietnam War. What a waste, what a cost...
I can't help but think what a difference these $ would've made if US govt in 1945 seized the opportunity and helped Hoh, Giap and co develop the country and build strong diplomatic relations in a very strategic part of Asia proper.
The book appealed to me for many reasons, but particularly because of Mike Maclear's impartial, dispassionate treatise of the subject.
Australia, like the US, is still coming to terms with its' own Vietnam War legacy. Many veterans are making the journey back to Vietnam to try to heal old wounds - I think that this book should be compuslory reading for all those who were there and for all those who see futility of war.
