Excellent Read But No Romance

Sci-fi is not my favorite genre but I can appreciate and enjoy a well written story. This story is well written and enjoy it I did.
Be warned... this book will keep you on your toes. So many characters, so many species, cultures, governments, alignments, assignments and all with odd sounding names! It was difficult to keep them all straight. I found myself flipping back pages to clear up my confusion.
Cognate is an interesting book and well worth reading. The only negative is that there is no romance in this book. It's strictly a sci-fi adventure featuring the lesbians, gays and intersexuals of the Minority Fleet.

Wonderful world building and engaging characters

This book has it all, great story line, engaging characters and believable dialogue. It's a shame the author has passed away and only two books in this series were completed before her death.

Sci-fi novel set in Earth's future, first in a series that follows the Coalition's Minority Fleet, a fleet that lumps together gays, lesbians, intersexed people, etc. from different Coalition species.
I was really in the mood for sci-fi, but I have to admit, I was bored most of the way through. There were two parallel storylines, and only one managed to keep my attention. That Ensign was just too adorable. There were other interesting characters, but overall I was at times overwhelmed by the number of characters to keep straight.
Both storylines gave me the feeling of watching a Star Trek episode. One good one and one rather meh.
One good thing about the book was that it was almost romance free, such a rare thing in lesfic. There were hints of 'romance' at the beginning that were brought up again in the end, but for the main part the book concentrated on the two main storylines.
I'm not sure why I was so bored. I can't find fault in the writing and the story was solid.
