About the Author
Jacqueline DeLaat is McCoy Professor of political science at Marietta College in Ohio and she also teaches online for the University of Maryland’s University College. In addition, she has lectured in China and Brazil, and in 2003 was selected for a Fulbright Teaching Award. Her educational background is in American politics and she holds a PhD from the University of Pittsburgh in public administration. For over twenty five years Dr. DeLaat has taught political science in small liberal arts institutions, with major teaching areas in public policy, public administration, American politics and institutions, and women in politics and the workplace. She is known as an enthusiastic teacher, favoring active student projects and a dynamic classroom―including the frequent use of current event projects, case studies, and simulations. Prior to her teaching career, Dr. DeLaat worked in the Washington, D.C. area, and held a variety of administrative post in government and in quasi-governmental organizations. Her Washington experience has enhanced both her subsequent teaching and research. She has also consulted with several colleges and universities, as well as private and governmental organizations, on gender issues. For the past decade, Dr. DeLaat’s professional agenda has focused on the development of a series of teaching cases designed to prepare students, and workers, for gender issues in the contemporary workplace. Originally centered in the United States, the work has recently broadened to include case studies set in workplaces in other countries, including Brazil, China and Germany. Her cases are frequently presented at international case study meetings, and have won awards including a special grant from the American Bar Association’s Commission on Justice and Education. Within the political science community, she has presented on the pedagogy and development of case studies. Additionally, she has also presented at several International Women’s Conferences, and in 2005 conducted an interactive workshop on gender in the workplace at the first Women’s Leadership Conference in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

A useful read in some parts but impenetrably dense in others

Paul Binski's Medieval Death: Ritual and Representation is something of a mixed bag. What the reader will get out of it largely depends on what the reader is looking for and what the reader's particular background is. It is helpful to think of the book being presented as described in the subtitle, i.e. medieval death in terms of its ritual in actual life and in terms of its representation in art, literature and religious philosophy and thought.

For myself, I felt Binski's presentation was distinctly more accessible in the first half of the book where he deals with how Christianity of the early medieval period affected how death was viewed and dealt with in Europe, particularly with regard to the rituals of burial, the increasing importance and evolving roles of tombs and of the relics of saints. I learned quite a bit that I was not previously aware of.

For example, the problem that developed regarding tombs in cathedrals and other religious institutions. Initially burials within churches were strictly prohibited, which was a problem in that everyone wanted to be buried within the church as that was considered the most sacred ground. And things being what they were, it was difficult for even the church to say no to kings, so initially exceptions were made for monarchs. Which in turn led to exceptions being made for well-regarded bishops and abbots, which led to exceptions being made for the higher nobility, and eventually to rich merchants. All of which led to the problem of increasing numbers of medieval churches, cathedrals, abbies and such becoming so cluttered with tombs that it became difficult for them to fulfill their original function of conducting religious services. The book is well-illustrated and includes photographs that illustrate the increasingly elaborate tomb designs that, however impressive, only served to add to the clutter.

Another particularly interesting section dealt with the role of effigies in dealing with the death of kings:

"The death of a monarch was a means of disclosing and enforcing forms of power.... When... a king died, an elaborate series of rituals was developed to guarantee the transference of power, and to cancel the inevitable anxieties which arose at such points of passage. In the case of royal burial... the principal strategic problem was where power was located in the period between the death of one monarch and the inauguration of the next. ... In the interim phase after the death of a monarch, the body politic could be incorporated not in a person at all but in an image: a funeral effigy, which could be ritually respected as if it were the king itself.... The power of such images is demonastrated in France by the fact that the Dauphin, the heir to the throne whose reign had notionally begun at his father's death, could not be seen with the image of his father lest two kings should be seen to rule in this state of political liminality."

The section dealing with what evolved as a cult of the relics of saints clarified for me why they were so prized. In medieval belief, formed as it was by the Christian belief in the ultimate literal resurrection of the body, the souls of saints were still connected to the remains of their earthly bodies. And so prayers given in the vicinity of those remains were more likely to be heard by the saints and then passed on to God. When the book's focus shifts to the matter of representation, however, the prose becomes increasingly dense and unless the reader has a fairly substantial interest, and background, in matters of medieval art, literature and religious philosophy, particularly with regards to the issue of purgatory in those areas to which Binski devotes a great deal of attention, the lay reader is apt to to become somewhat numbed by the inaccessibility and unlikely to gain much from it. An example of the style in this section would be this:

"Nevertheless, it's fairly clear that to understand the why and when of the transi tomb, we have to sidestop this literary component, tempting as it may be to see the textual elements of such tombs as offering a simple key to their iconogrophy and signification. Transi tombs are regarded too often as a transparent form of text - as the visual equivalent to a literary culture of guilt and penance, as sermons in stone -- with multiple points of reference to a substantial body of thought, to which they are related as second-order epiphenomena. Owst long ago noted that the character of admonitions of the 'such shalt thou be' type were common in Mendicant-inspired sermonizing on death in the tradition going back at least to St. Bernard. But there is no reason to assume from this that tombs of this type were essentially like sermons: their didacticism was much more class-specific."

Overall, I would recommend this book as at least partly worth reading for anyone interested in medieval burial and tombs, in how Christianity affected how people thought of death in relation to the soul and the body, and in particular how cults arose around the relics of saints and how tombs inside cathedrals and monasteries became a serious space problem over the centuries. Beyond that however, I would only recommend it for readers with an interest and background in medieval art and religious thought and in how death was viewed in those veins.

About the Author
John N. Gardner brings unparalleled experience to students as an author. The recipient of his institution's highest award for teaching excellence, John has over forty years of experience directing and teaching in the most widely emulated first-year seminar in the country, the University 101 course at the University of South Carolina (USC), Columbia. John is universally recognized as one of the country's leading educators for his role in initiating and orchestrating an international reform movement to improve the beginning college experience, a concept he coined as "the first-year experience." He is the founding executive director of the National Resource Center for The First-Year Experience and Students in Transition at USC, as well as the Policy Center on the First Year of College and the John N. Gardner Institute for Excellence in Undergraduate Education (www.jngi.org), both based in Brevard, N.C. Betsy O. Barefoot is a writer, researcher, and teacher whose special area of scholarship is the first-year seminar. During her tenure at USC from 1988 to 1999, she served as codirector for research and publications at the National Resource Center for The First-Year Experience and Students in Transition. She also taught University 101 and graduate courses on the first-year experience and the principles of college teaching. She conducts first-year seminar faculty training workshops around the world and is frequently called on to evaluate first-year seminar outcomes. Betsy is codirector and senior scholar in the Policy Center on the First Year of College and Vice President of the John N. Gardner Institute for Excellence in Undergraduate Education both in Brevard, N.C. In her Policy Center role she led a major national research project to identify institutions of excellence in the first college year. She currently works with both two- and four-year campuses in evaluating all components of the first year.

I just took the echo boards this morning. I ...

My CD would not allow me to view the images. I wished that the review questions were geared more to what the fetal boards actually ask on the test. Perhaps it has recently changed but the content of the actual board exam was much different in the direction it was going then the review questions in this book. Having said that, I read this book all the way through and took notes and clinically I have improved as far as recognizing pathology and anomalies, so whether or not I passed my exam that I just took, I feel that this book helped me to better understand fetal echo in terms that made sense.

FETAL ECHOCARDIOGRAPHY

This book is tremendous. I have read it completely for the first time and plan to go back to chapter one and start taking notes. I'm preparing for the new ARDMS fetal echo boards. I purchased another fetal echo book thinking it would be perfect because it cost 179.00 from amazon--well I was wrong this book is written by a sonographer for a sonographer. This book is an in depth approach that follows the heart from embryology to Double outlet right ventricle to arrythmias. I think this book will be a great addition to my personal library at work or home.
