This companion volume to Freeman's Building Your Own Greenhouse (Stackpole, 1997) explains how to raise plants in a home greenhouse. Freeman, who designed and built his own greenhouse, begins with chapters on types of greenhouses, equipment, soil, air, water, heat, light, pests, and diseases. The rest of the book covers growing seedlings for transplanting into the outdoor garden and raising vegetables and herbs in the greenhouse. Freeman lists vegetable, flower, and herb species suitable for growing to maturity in a greenhouse. He also touches on growing houseplants and cut flowers, but specialty plants like orchids and African violets are beyond the scope of the book. Although Freeman refers readers to his earlier book for further information in a few places, this practical introduction to greenhouse gardening is recommended for public and botanical libraries whether or not they own his previous book.?Sue O'Brien, Downers Grove P.L., IL

First and only reference needed

Okay, I am new to gardening. If I want to learn about something new, I read a bunch of books on the subject before I begin. So after reading over a dozen books on vegetables, herbs, gardening, seed saving and botany, I got Mark Freeman's "Gardening in your Greenhouse." It answered all the questions that had been on my mind and gave me advice I didn't realize I needed until after I read it. I provided me with the information and confidence I needed to start planting all those seeds I had bought. A great reference for the novice and experienced gardener.

Most books on Greenhouse Gardening focus on the building of the greenhouse itself and don't spend enough time talking about the gardening process. This is a great book for a person who moves into a new home and already has a greenhouse. This book is an excellent education in greenhouse gardening.

Grade 4 Up A collection of spooky stories, competently adapted and retold (sometimes quite freely) from world folklore, including Japan, Africa, and Latin America, as well as Europe and the U.S. Fairy tales are represented, from Grimm's The Robber Bridegroom to the modern urban folktale Lavender, a reworking of the phantom hitchhiker story. Some tales are familiar, appearing in one form or another in various collections, e.g., Tailypo, but many are not. Stories have also been adapted from the work of Nathaniel Hawthorne, John Bunyan, and Washington Irving. The stories drawn from collections of regional American folklore are not only the freshest, but often the scariest. Sources are fully documented at the back of the book. The cover has just the right touch of gruesomeness to attract readers, with bats, rats, weird faces, and a skeleton arm escaping from the grave. Almost every story is illustrated with a full-page picture in pen-and-ink and wash. These are well crafted but, with some notable exceptions, don't always capture the true terror of the tales, and don't enhance the text in a spine-tingling manner. Many of the stories will be effective as read-alouds. There are some delicious shivers here, with plenty of fodder for an active imagination, as well as excitement. Great short stories!

kids always sort of himm and haw at reading, but once started they not only can't put this book down, but are up to show me or tell me a part of the 'scary' story. They're a good length for my 6y and 9y old- they normally get in a couple while I cook dinner. My kids love all things horror, so these are far from being too scary for them. That said, they love the unexpected twists and endings. I'll be ordering more!

Great for kids who scare easily

These stories are great for young ones. My 7 year old is a bit more afraid of things than most kids his age and can get a little frightened from these, but not so afraid that he complains. The stories are really fun for the whole family to read aloud on rainy nights or around the fire pit.

About the Author

Guillermo O’Donnell is the Helen Kellogg Professor of Government and Fellow at the Kellogg Institute for International Studies at the University of Notre Dame.
