Finally!

Written in a very logical, straightforward way, with just the right amount of pathophysiology, allowing for learning rather than memorizing. Sections are divided and subdivided so that you can easily find exactly what you are looking for - if not the entire chapter. The pathophysiology and treatment sections are what separate this handbook from the others I have bought during residency (Ferri, Wash Man., Pocket Med). I was initially skeptical as I already spent way too much money on handbooks, that for the most part never see my hands. However... this one delivers. It is an all-encompassing handbook - by that I mean that for its size, it relates the most information in a very user friendly format. Treatment is in depth - with the entire book being high yield for both the medicine wards and USMLE exams (I wish I had this for my medicine booards). I have never written a review, but this book deserves it. Like one of the other reviewers stated, this is the best available - getting my highest praise and recomendation. Upon becoming a chief resident next year, I will ensure that the entire residency class is aware of it. Yes... I like it that much. Trust me in that so will you. Enjoy.

A personal touch

I rotated on Dr. Rosen's medicine team during my third year ICU rotation. It was the greatest rotation I ever had. This guy loves medicine. All the medical students and residents tried rotating onto his team because he was so passionate about teaching. He loved to sit with us and simply field questions if we were having a slow day. He was also all over every aspect of each patients care. Definitely meticulous. His book is an awesome compilation of his teachings. It is as though I have him in my coat pocket whenever I need him. I love that. This chubby handbook is everything you need on the wards. Diseases discussed and broken down extremely well, with everything actually being explained rather than simply stated. His method of delivery is to break things down by effects on organ systems. The book also serves as an excellent guide to the treatment of those diseases... being basically a pharmacology text as well. Its an excellent read.

I have come to love this book. Really easy to follow - with a nice outline format. Covers the major wards topics very well. Very nice pharmacology sections with mechanisms etc... so serves as a constant reminder of what you are prescribing - really a good blend. I can honestly highly recommend this book.

The biomedical sciences have recently undergone revolutionary change, due to the ability to digitize and store large data sets. In neuroscience, the data sources include measurements of neural activity measured using electrode arrays, EEG and MEG, brain imaging data from PET, fMRI, and optical imaging methods. Analysis, visualization, and management of these time series data sets is a growing field of research that has become increasingly important both for experimentalists and theorists interested in brain function. Written by investigators who have played an important role in developing the subject and in its pedagogical exposition, the current volume addresses the need for a textbook in this interdisciplinary area.

The book is written for a broad spectrum of readers ranging from physical scientists, mathematicians, and statisticians wishing to educate themselves about neuroscience, to biologists who would like to learn time series analysis methods in particular and refresh their mathematical and statistical knowledge in general, through self-pedagogy. It may also be used as a supplement for a quantitative course in neurobiology or as a textbook for instruction on neural signal processing.

The first part of the book contains a set of essays meant to provide conceptual background which are not technical and shall be generally accessible. Salient features include the adoption of an active perspective of the nervous system, an emphasis on function, and a brief survey of different theoretical accounts in neuroscience. The second part is the longest in the book, and contains a refresher course in mathematics and statistics leading up to time series analysis techniques. The third part contains applications of data analysis techniques to the range of data sources indicated above (also available as part of the Chronux data analysis platform from http://chronux.org), and the fourth part contains special topics.

Finally, this long-awaited book is out!

Since the discovery of the kimograph, the statement, "Method ist Alles", is much appreciated in neuroscience. Progress depends on innovation, and progress in a particular discipline depends strongly on methods developed in related fields. The study of brain dynamics requires data collection and, perhaps even more so, data analysis. The author is a leading expert on many areas related to signal analysis and as a co-organizer of the now famous "Analysis of Neural Data" annual course, has trained and influenced many young minds. However, most of this knowledge was only available in notebooks and references linked to the vast jungle of statistics, non-linear dynamics and math. Now, we have a 'recipe' book. Mitra's book contains and discusses virtually all major contemporary methods used in analyzing continuous and point process data, with a strong emphasis on the strengths of frequency domain analysis. Although the chapters are quite demanding and require much more than the usual '101' intros to the topics, each of them are patiently and scholarly introduced with ample examples to guide the reader. This volume should be available for frequent consultation in every lab serious about neuroscience data processing.

Neuroinformatics tour de force

Observed Brain Dynamics by Mitra and Bokil is a unique overview of the techniques, and methods in the analysis of neuroscientific data. The book takes on the ambitious goal of trying to develop most of the contemporary methods of data analysis in neuroscience from electrophysiology to imaging modalities of MRI and PET. The approach the authors take combines the insight of the physicist and applicability of the statistician and both perspectives are creatively intertwined throughout the book. After a generous set of tutorial based chapters the authors show how these methods are applied to a host of specific problems in neuroinformatics, which are both informative and interesting to study. What makes this book unique in particular is that there is essentially nowhere else to find this content. Stylistically the book is clear and to the point and I heartily recommend it to everyone's library who works in this area or is interested in approaching this exciting subject.

Frank Schmalleger, Ph.D., is Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. He chaired the university’s department of sociology, social work, and criminal justice for almost 20 years – while specializing in research in crime and delinquency. He has taught dozens of courses at both the graduate and undergraduate level in both on-ground and on-line environments.� Schmalleger is the author of many books and journal articles, including the standard-setting Criminal Justice Today, 14/e (Pearson); Criminal Justice: A Brief Introduction, 12/e (Pearson); Criminology Today, 8/e (Pearson); Criminology, 3/e (Pearson); Criminal Law Today, 6/e (Pearson); Corrections in the Twenty-First Century, 6/e (McGraw-Hill; with John Smykla); Courts and Criminal Justice in America (Pearson; with Larry Siegel and John Worrall); Juvenile Delinquency, 10/e (Pearson; with Clem Bartollas); and Policing, 2/e (Pearson; with John Worrall). Simon de Montfort, the leader of the English barons, was the first leader of a political movement to seize power from a reigning monarch. The Parliament of 1265 - known as De Montfort's Parliament - was the first English parliament to have elected representatives. Only fifteen months later de Montfort's gains were reversed when Prince Edward escaped captivity and defeated the rebels at the Battle of Evesham. Simon de Montfort was killed. Following this victory savage retribution was exacted on the rebels and authority was restored to Henry III. Adrian Jobson captures the intensity of de Montfort's radical crusade through these most revolutionary years in English history in this spirited and dramatic narrative.

Incomprehensible

I tried to find specific conditions in the book - and the procedures to follow for treating them. I couldn't even figure out the procedures to follow when reading them - the writing just isn't very clear.

If there is any organization to this book, I couldn't detect it. The author is very enthusiastic about the material and gives lots of her experiences with her patients. That's nice, but judicious editing, better organization and clarity is what this book needs.

Readers follow two children and their father, pictured as transit map–style stick figures, who spend a rainy day exploring routes. "Riding the A requires some patience/ if you plan to visit all forty-four stations," they advise. The trains occasionally acquire some light personification ("The 7 is on his way to meet... / his friends at Times Square, 42nd Street!"); after the F and G lines separate at Bergen Street, "The G says, 'Don't cry. I will meet you/ again at Roosevelt Avenue!"). The tone is largely celebratory-- rate hikes and construction don't come up--but Niemann finds pleasure in unexpected places, too ("There are plenty of critters on the tracks of the J/ enjoying the subway all night and all day"). His folksy gouaches are color-coded to match the various subway lines, and his pitchblack backdrops make the colors explode, while alluding to tunnel interiors. An abundance of droll details will delight regular straphangers and stir the imaginations of transportation-obsessed children. Ages 2–5.

PreSchool-Grade 1—This colorful, vivacious, child-centered title began with a post on Niemann's blog, Abstract City, in which he describes a day of riding the subway with his two sons just for fun. The artist uses thick gouache paint to render his characters as standard pictograms, akin to those on city signs, with curved edges for hands and feet, and the technique creates a chalky texture that looks like correction fluid. Visual communication lords over the text. Niemann uses many tropes for expression: the youngsters, excited to spend the rainy day on the subway, hi-five. The agony of the adventure coming to an end is punctuated with tears bursting from one son and father dragging the other one, boneless. The spreads of the dedication page, the A train and all its 44 stops, and the wild crisscrossing array of colored lines under Times Square mirroring the famed city lights on the surface, capture the glory of this venerable transportation system. The rhyming text and references to subway lore add chuckles for older readers, but the meter does create an occasional stumble. Train lovers everywhere will enjoy this picture-book ride conducted by a New York Times blogger. One day, a bored father and his two children take an adventure on public transportation through Manhattan and its neighboring boroughs. Along the way, they wave to rats and the Statue of Liberty, ride next to cowboys and bankers, and plan circuitous routes just to prolong the fun. The text is sometimes choppy and awkward (“Riding the A requires some patience if you plan to visit all forty-four stations”). But the gouache art is distinctively urban and bold. Faceless, silhouetted figures resemble those on the pedestrian crossing lights, and the NYC subway's rainbow of iconic lines and signage is creatively woven into the dark, black underground and on the sunny elevated tracks. Other titles, such as Heather Lynn Miller's Subway Ride (2008), are more universal. Niemann's enthusiastic offering is an experience that, like many others, can only be had in the Big Apple. For the Little Subway Riders in the Family

Okay, this book has a very limited market. If you don't live in NYC or aren't familiar with the City's subway system, then I doubt you or your children will see the appeal. On the other hand, if you have a son like mine, who loves to ride the rails and look at the subway map, then this book is fantastic.

The text is simple and the rhymes are a bit weak in spots, but the artwork is satisfyingly impressionistic with plenty of color contrast on a generally black background. Most importantly, the subway line symbols are all there as well as some of the routes, which my son loves to point out to me.

The fact of the matter is, my son wants this book read to him every night. To me, that's high praise indeed.

This book takes three guys (a dad and two sons) off the roads and onto the subways of New York City. The people are drawn as if they are universal sign characters -- like they just stepped off the mens' room door. Amazing how expressive these illustrations are. Great graphic representation of the New York Subway system.
