LIFE CHANGING!!!

You MUST OWN this book! It is absolutely life changing! I recently went through a very difficult divorce, and am now a single mom of 3 small children. We are a very close little family, and this hard time has brought us even closer. With everything God is, including His protection, we are doing great! I am now free and happier and more motivated than ever! I am succeeding in the Radiology program achieving this way to provide for my family myself after being a stay-at-home mom for 5 1/2 yrs. I am loving this program! I have grown stronger as a mother and a woman, and immensely in my faith and relationship with my Maker! God is amazing, and this book confirmed for me just how He gave us His Word for our lives....it is for US - we just have to believe and have faith, and apply it to our everyday lives, whether challenging or easier. His promises are for ME and YOU, we must expect that what He tells us in His Word will happen for us! I am back to buy a copy for myself (I borrowed a friend's) and more to give away! Absolutely LIFE CHANGING!

Excellent book! Increased my faith! Bought more to share withothers to help them increase their faith. Even purchased for an unbeliever who my husband has been witnessing to -- we think this will help him step over & ask Jesus to become his personal Lord so he can claim this psalm. Especially since he has a fear of what ISIS may do here in the US.There is a chapter in this book where it gives salvation verses to those who do not know the Lord Jesus.

I found it to be an excellent compilation of practical and diverse examples for both new and moderate users. The graphical menu approach with step-by-step examples and full web videos with CD support for working finished models is very supportive of the workbench interface as well as the reviews of the relevant physics involved for robust boundary conditions. I will be looking for more for advanced uses in the future for ANSYS Multi-physics, Explicit STR, Rigid Dynamics, and LS-Dyna extensions. If the author can create more, I will look here first.

Valuable Training Tool for ANSYS Workbench

This is a well written tutorial for ANSYS Workbench. Having used ANSYS for over twenty years, I used this book to bring myself kicking and screaming out of the APDL format. The book includes a CD that is very helpful in the learning process. The author has wisely set up the book to be followed in a program like fashion. Unfortunately, the book is so popular in my firm that I can't seem to keep it on my bookshelf. We have sent folks to ANSYS formal training and have had better results just having them go through this workbook. We now provide each new analyst with this workbook.

About the Author

Cameron Newham lives in Perth, Western Australia. After completing a Bachelor of Science majoring in information technology and geography at the University of Western Australia, Cameron joined Universal Defence Systems (later to become Australian Defence Industries) as a software engineer. He has been with ADI for six years, working on various aspects of command and control systems. In his spare time Cameron can be found surfing the Internet, ballroom dancing, or driving his sports car. He also has more than a passing interest in space science, 3D graphics, synthesiser music, and Depeche Mode.

Strong, gently-paced intro

The bash shell is now the most common and featureful command shell in the Unix world. It's full capability certainly isn't obvious to a beginner facing a command prompt, but is well worth exploring. This book is a great place for the novice to start. The first chapter addresses the most fundamental question: just what is a command shell?

The ideal reader already knows at least the names of the emacs and vi editors. That much helps understand the many features and two distinct feature sets available for command line editing. I consider fancy command line editing over-rated for fluent typists, but it's there in the second chapter for all who want it and anyone can benefit from at least a little knowledge of it. After that successive chapters pull the reader deeper into the bash feature set: aliases and shell variables, scripting and shell programming, and debugging when the shell programs or functions go awry.

Since this book is aimed at the novice, Newham and Rosenblatt skip lightly over a few of the more advanced subjects. For example, exceptions and trap handling get only cursory treatment, since they get into deep weirdness very fast. The authors are honest about this shallow treatment, though, and give enough information for a novice to recognize the basics and look them up in more advanced references.

This is nicely organized for the self-taught student. As a result, it's not laid out as a programmer's reference manual - anyone who wants that kind of reference just isn't looking at the right book. For its intended reader, though, it's a great book. It gets readers off to a fast start, and lets them decide just how much they want to bite off at a time. I recommned it very highly.

Cameron Newham's LEARNING THE BASH SHELL is an introduction to the command-line interface most commonly encountered today in server administration and in the terminal application of personal computers running Linux and Mac OS X. As I write this, the most recent edition is the 3rd, published in 2005, which describes bash 3.0. Newham explains such things as how programs communicate with the shell, keyboard navigation commands and shell customization. While he uses some of the old standard Unix programs (e.g. grep, sort) in examples, this is not a book about how to wield the power of Unix-like systems in general. Also, shell scripting is given only a brief mention, and those wanting to write powerful scripts will have to turn to another book (like O'Reilly's Classic Shell Scripting.

I have been using bash for nearly all file management and system administration tasks since 2002, and I still learned a few things here. However, this book is sorely in need of a new edition. The 3rd edition still assumes that the typical newcomer to bash is on a multi-user UNIX system, has access to a Postscript printer from the command line and a magnetic tape drive, and has probably used another shell like tcsh. Surely, even by the 3rd edition's publication date of 2005, most people interested in bash were people who had installed Linux on their personal computers. Also, bash is now at version 4.0, and readers would benefit from a small presentation of what has changed.

Confusing

I have been using UNIX for a few years, nothing too in depth, but I can get around. I recently went through the book Learning the UNIX Operating System, Fifth Edition without any trouble and then moved onto the book in question. Starting with the third chapter I felt completely lost and had no idea what the heck the author was talking about. The examples are vague and unhelpful. I kept reading, however, and into the fourth chapter the confusion persisted. Perhaps if the author decided to include some hands-on examples and/or exercises I might understand the concepts better.

I could see this being a worthwhile book if you know how to program already, but if you are just familiar with UNIX navigation, commands, (ie. anything in the Learning the UNIX Operating System, Fifth Edition book) then you might be out of luck.

This book transports you back in time.

"Middle Ages Unlocked" is an amazing book. It really transports you back in time to the period so much different from ours. I loved every single page. This book covers the early medieval period, from 1050 to 1300, which is great, because this period is not very often covered. Every aspect of life - religion, education clothing and many more - is described in impressive detail here. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in history.

The author was obviously knowledgeable about the subject but I guess the approach to topics was at too high an elevation for me. Also, some topics were covered in depth that didn't interest me to the level of detail provided.

Celiac disease

Many (most it seems) of the reviews for this book are from sufferers of Crohn's disease and Colitis, and that's fantastic that the SCD helps those conditions. I'd like to chime in on my experience with using it to treat (and hopefully ultimately reverse) Celiac disease. The diet was originally developed to treat Celiac disease, and unfortunately for Celiac sufferers it has fallen out of favor as a treatment for that disorder.

Celiac disease has ravaged my health and life. I have struggled with food allergies, chemical sensitivities, thyroid problems (multi-nodular goiter), been diagnosed with IBS, Aspergers, ADD, and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. All of those things were symptoms of the underlying problem of Celiac disease. When I finally got a Celiac diagnosis and went on a gluten-free diet it seemed to change my life. No longer was I going to doctors' offices on an almost weekly basis (both conventional and alternative approaches). I had been spending thousands of dollars a month on every imaginable therapy and supplement. The gluten-free diet lessened that considerably for about a year. I knew I was on the right path. Then a lot of the symptoms started to slowly return and it was very confusing as I never deviated from the diet.

After a year of the gluten-free diet the SCD didn't seem quite so restrictive or impossible. And I was desperate. It was probably vanity that got me to make the leap, as my hair had been thinning for years and was only getting worse on the gluten-free diet, to the point that you could see my scalp and I had barely any hair left (I'm female in my 30s).

I've been on the SCD for 4 months now. It has COMPLETELY reversed all of these conditions. I am not taking any additional supplements or medications of any kind, or doing any other therapies of any kind, or visiting any doctor of any kind. My hair is growing in thicker than it ever has been in my life. The IBS, Aspergers, ADD, thyroid problems, chemical sensitivities, food allergies and chronic fatigue have all faded. My head is clear, my ability to focus has improved enormously, my nerves are calm, my energy level is at least three times or more what it used to be, my strength and physical endurance has gone way up, as have my moods. I feel stronger inside and out.

As a caution, I will add that the first two months of this diet were at times hellish. Not only the adjustment to the new food protocol, which is indeed very restrictive and can kill your social life, but also because as my body was apparently detoxing I went through various phases of anxiety and irritability and fatigue. But nothing as bad as when my illness peaked about 2 years ago. I recognized them as detox symptoms, and am now thankfully over the hump. All the work and effort has been well worth it. I feel like the SCD saved my life (not to mention my pocketbook).

SCD works, even after multiple surgeries

I've been on the SCD diet since June/97 and it does work. I've had 40 inches of small bowel removed after two surgeries, and SCD works.
Elaine does a good job of explaining the principles of the diet and is a must read for any IBD sufferers (Crohn's, Ulcerative Colitis, IBS). Regardless what the so-called medical specialists say, diet change does matter. Within two days of starting the diet, all my heartburn problems have disappeared ever since.
I started the SCD diet because I was having a flare-up (lost weight, frequency, ...) and my specialist wanted me to nose-tube feed myself at night. I chose the diet instead and have been feeling good without regrets, and I am sure the SCD prevented the need for a 3rd surgery.

What A Blessing!

Breaking the Vicious Cycle book and web site that goes with it has been a true blessing for my toddler son. My son was diagnosed with IBD in August 2011 when he was 19 months old. He spent almost a year with bloody, mucousy diapers and long crying nights before a colonoscopy & endoscopy were performed. The pictures were unbelievable to say the least with all the ulcers and inflammation. I will never forget getting the news at Childrens Hospital that my son would not be going home that afternoon instead he would be admitted right away for treatment. My husband and I both cried for many days because we didn't know what all this meant for our little boys future. Thankfully my son's 5 days of treatment consisted of only an antibiotic, anti inflammatory pills and Elecare formula. I have read of many other drugs that I am very thankful he didn't have to endure. He was released from the hospital and told to take 2 anit inflammatory pills a day along with at least 28 ounces of elecare formula. Long story short....the pills didn't work and I tried very hard to adjust the diet to what I thought was making him more comfortable. Needless to say I was feeding him EVERYTHING wrong according to the book.
I researched online every evening while my kids were sleeping on how to help my son. I never liked the drug idea and have always felt food had an impact.....I just didn't realize how much until I stumbled upon Breaking the Vicious Cycle. I truly cried when I found the SCD site and the book. I knew right away that it could be the answers to our prayers and reading all the reviews really gave me hope! I bought the book that evening and started the diet the day after......I slowly started the diet because he was eating mainly sugars and complex carbs. 1 month later my son is doing WONDERFUL! He no longer complains of his belly hurting, his bowel movements are 1-3 a day down from 4-7, his bowel movements are now formed instead of mucousy, bloody diarrhea, no more anti inflammatory medication and he has become a happy playful ball of energy! Amazing what food does to a body! Now for the cooking portion....I am not a cook by any means nor do I enjoy making extravagant dinners so the menu is a little overwhelming at a glance, but once you get started it's very easy. Most meals are so simple they don't take long to prepare or cook. You will need to take some time to buy the basic ingredients before starting. Most of us don't keep almond flour on hand! I love my son and I would do anything for him and this food plan is well worth every ounce of energy! I NEVER write reviews, but I felt compelled to share my story especially since very few babies are diagnosed with IBD. I guess in some way I'm trying to pay it forward!
