Diabetes Author Recommends This Book

I am the author of "Diabetes! A Lifetime of Being Too Sweet" and have had Type 1 diabetes for 45 years. I am also an advocate for the American Diabetes Association and I always bring a copy of this book whenever I give talks and presentations. I also do quite a bit of research about diabetes and you can always trust the Mayo Clinic for reliable and accurate information about any disease. I highly recommend this book.

Talking to your MD is not enough! If you are told you have diabetes - accept the truth, and get this book to really understand this new dimension in your life. It has helped me greatly and even doing everything right it has taken quite a while to really get my diet adjusted and get my blood sugars where they are good for the long term. This book covers everything. The different types of diabetes and an easy science background to understand what causes it, and what levers you can pull to maybe even reduce or eliminate it.

So far in my quest for information on Diabetes, this book rates as the most informative, reliable, well organized, well written material on Diabetes. I recently found out I have the disease and use this book to educate myself. I have it on my Kindle which goes everywhere I go - in the car, to a doctor's appointment, etc. I learn a little bit at a time and the way the book is written makes it easy to remember. "Nugent (Notre Dame) is a fine historian and a good storyteller. His latest book is a multilayered narrative of the movement of millions of Europeans to the Americas. Different from many other descriptions of the transatlantic passages, which tend to be focused on one side of the ocean (the lands of the senders) or the other (the countries of reception and resettlement), Crossings tears down what Frank Thistlewaite once called a saltwater curtain. Nugent moves―and moves his readers―back and forth across the Atlantic, describing the social and political conditions that pushed Europeans out of the Old World and the factors―not least of which was the promise of a better life―that pulled them into the New World, particularly to this country and to Argentina, Brazil, and Canada. Using a variety of social and demographic data by which to compare the several countries of immigration, the author challenges certain widely held assumptions about American [meaning US] exceptionalism. That is one of the subtexts in this interesting and informative work. This concise, well written, and data rich book is a nice overview of major features of migration across the Atlantic in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Nugent summarizes a large volume of data quite well. He initially reviews features of the emigrations from the major European donor nations and then the immigration patterns to the 4 major American recipient (Argentina, Brazil, Canada, US) nations. There is particularly nice use of tabular data and text summaries of important qualitative features of migrations. Nugent is very good on the many common features of the migrations - the extension of traditional intra-European patterns of migration, the importance of expanding rail and steam links, the increasing importance of labor migration, and the high rate of backwards flow across the Atlantic. Nugent also does a nice job of discussing many of the distinctive and contingent features of the trans-Atlantic migrations. Major emigration from much of the Balkans was contingent on the relatively late penetration of railroads, the high rate of female emigration from Ireland reflected distinctive features of Irish society, and the strongly oneway migration of Ashkenazi Jews resulted from recurrent pogroms in Russia. I suspect many readers will find this book particularly interesting with respect to these more detailed discussions. The existence of so much migration between Canada and the US was unknown to me previously and the descriptions of the South American migrations are quite interesting.

Nugent is also concerned with evaluating 2 major issues. First, was migration to the USA distinctive, as is claimed in our national mythology. Nugent concludes that the answer is no. While there were some distinctive features, migration involving the USA had much in common with migrations involving the other recipient nations. Nugent also analyzes a stereotyped model of the demographic transition and finds it fails to capture the richness and variety of demographic changes. Very nice bibliography.

Focussed, comprehensive, up-to-date textbook

The Colloidal Domain by Evans and Wennerstrom is a comprehensive guided tour into the realm of colloidal behavior. Every chapter opens with a summary of key concepts (concept map) that one must commit oneself to learn through the development, through theory and examples, presented in that chapter. The authors have chosen to title every sub-section with a sentence or a phrase that summarizes the ideas developed and demonstrated there. The text is written in a style that makes it an excellent textbook for use in both undergraduate and graduate classes.

The typical examples come from the field of surfactants, from the behavior of bilayers and micelles. Hence the text first describes the self-assembly of amphiphilic molecules, introducing key thermodynamic principles that guide it, including the role of surfaces and surface tension; and the kinetic processes that control it. These concepts come handy later when the behavior of micelles, bilayers and emulsions in general is discussed. I really enjoyed the chapter on forces relevant to the colloidal domain, which presents the essential expressions and concepts in a very useful and concise fashion. The development on forces in colloids paves way for equally illustrative discussion of the phase behavior and the kinetic and thermodynamic factors that contribute to the stability of colloids. In this context, Gouy-Chapman theory, Debye-Huckel theory and DLVO theory, are presented, and role of dissolved ions and polymers is demonstrated in a very insightful fashion.

I recommend the text on Colloidal Dispersions by Russel, Saville and Schowalter to readers interested in learning more about colloidal dispersions based on particulate matter, and the text by Morrison & Ross for them who have more interest in foams. Most soft matter texts (say by Hamley, or R. A. L. Jones or Ron Larson) include discussion on colloidal dispersions, and one may wish to consult them to see how the knowledge of colloidal behavior provides good starting point for learning about polymers, gels and liquid crystals.

I highly recommend this textbook for beginners, teachers, students and researchers. I hope more and more texts will follow this text in its lucid and comprehensive presentation of fundamental concepts.

Note: writing below review based on my perusing the first edition, which is not significantly different than the second, except for the aforementioned added chapter, IMO.
Particularly liked the "Concept Map" at the beginning of each chapter - this tells me what I can find in each chapter and gives me a good overview of where to find what (more than any Table of Contents can).
Could have done with a chapter on various analytical and experimental tools used to study colloids. This is done briefly in the chapter on bilayers but the spectrum of available tools in studying colloids, micelles, and other structures in this domain would serve the reader well and complete the book, so to speak. In any case, this is one of the books I'd like to buy soon.

Great Lighthearted Fantasy!

I picked this book up and was blown away by it. Ingeniously written, this is a great weekend read for someone who is looking for laughs along with clever bits of dialogue and writing. I throughly enjoyed it and highly recommend it. I tend to stay toward more darker, serious fantasy and this was a great break.

Just what I was looking for

I am a white belt only six classes in. I was looking for a book that would help me know what I should expect and give me some advise on my new adventure. This book was great and made me realize that the struggle and confusion I feel right now is completely normal. It tells you what moves you should focus on at the white belt stage and has some cool move maps at the end. Well written and easily comprehensible.

Simple Yet Fantastically Well Done

WOW! That was literally my first impression when I started reading this book. I mean a book on the martial arts and there was only five pictures in it, and one of those pictures was of a couple of pages of a book! What? How is this going to help anyone learn Jiu Juitsu? Well let me tell you something, this is probably one of the best books you could ever read to teach you what every beginning student should know and be doing when the start down the path to learning Jiu Juitsu or any martial art for that matter. The author is providing you not a manual on physical techniques, but a book on a more important component to your training and that is wisdom. I think I now have another "favorite" martial arts author to create a section for in my own personal library.

Keep up the great work Mr. Staark!

Great Book

I enjoyed this book. I have been training Jiu Jitsu for a year now (three stripe white belt). There are so many times that I want to ask questions to my instructor, but it is really hard because he has limited time to spend with all of us. This book explains allot of the things I have been wondering about. In my progression in Jiu Jitsu I am beginning to pull off some chain-link moves. They are many examples of these moves towards the back of the book. I would love to see some videos on how to execute the chain drills. I know most of the moves individually, but to see how they are chain-linked together would be awesome and I think I could really improve my game.
