About the Author
John LeFevre has enjoyed a distinguished career in international finance. He joined Salomon Brothers immediately out of college, and worked for Citigroup in New York, London, and Hong Kong. Wonderful, incredible

If you're looking for one possible road to hell, among the many that exist, this could be an option. Wonderful, incredible, almost unbelieveable stories of deceit, greed and corruption. Lefevre has a knack for storytelling and making it hilarious in the process. This is in line with stories from other people's experience in the industry, and considering Lefevre's reputation I doubt there is little, if any, embellishment. Great read, must have been one wild ride.

Funny big but probably fictional

The book is really entertaining. All the deviance that are said about Wall Street is thoroughly pictures here. I did some research on the author and found some articles where they had done fact checks and interviews with his colleagues. Looks like fiction and exaggeration played a major role during the writing process. For example, one debunked story was the fight with Manchester United squad in Hong Kong. Based on the information the author provides about the deal he was working on when the fight happened, the timeline would suggest 2006. Apparently Manchester United never had any Hong Kong tour in 05, 06 or 07.
But all in all, it's a very funny and entertaining read, which would probably make a good movie too.

Let's be real. This isn't a classic. This isn't literature. It's entertainment. But is it ever entertaining! I read this book quickly on a trip and couldn't help but laughing throughout out loud. Don't believe half of it, but the likely embellished stories are definitely a riot and worth the read.

About the Author
Dr. Freda Adler is a Distinguished Professor of Criminal Justice. She is the Director of the Master of Science Program in Criminology and a Visiting Professor in the Department of Criminology at the University of Pennsylvania. She received her BA in sociology, her MA in criminology, and her Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Adler began her career in criminal justice as an evaluator of drug and alcohol treatment programs for federal and state governments. Since 1968, she has taught subjects such as criminal justice, criminology, comparative criminal justice systems, statistics, and research methods. She has served as criminal justice advisor to the United Nations, as well as to federal, state, and foreign governments. Dr. Adler's published works include 13 books as author or coauthor, 9 books as editor or coeditor, and over 90 journal articles. She has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Criminal Justice, Criminology, and the Journal of Research on Crime and Delinquency. Dr. Adler serves as editorial consultant to the Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology and is coeditor of Advances in Criminological Theory. She also has served as president as the American Society of Criminology (1994-1995).

Dr. Gerhard O. W. Mueller was Distinguished Professor of Criminal Justice at Rutgers University, School of Criminal Justice. Between 1974 and 1982, he served as Chief of the United Nations Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Branch. As such, he was responsible for all of the United Nations’ programs dealing with problems of crime and justice worldwide. He was a faculty member of universities and colleges across the country and around the world.

William Laufer is the Julian Aresty Professor at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, where he is Professor of Legal Studies and Business Ethics, Sociology, and Criminology. Dr. Laufer, graduate chair of the Department of Criminology at Penn, received his B.A. in social and behavioral sciences at Johns Hopkins University, his J.D. at Northeastern University School of Law, and his Ph.D. at Rutgers University, School of Criminal Justice. Dr. Laufer's research has appeared in law reviews and a wide range of criminal justice, legal, and psychology journals, including Journal of Research in Crime and Delinquency, American Journal of Criminal Law, Law and Human Behavior, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, and Business Ethics Quarterly. His most recent book is Corporate Bodies and Guilty Minds: The Failure of Corporate Criminal Liability (University of Chicago Press). Dr. Laufer is coeditor of the Handbook of Psychology and Law; Personality, Moral Development and Criminal Behavior; and Crime, Values and Religion. He is series coeditor with Freda Adler of Advances in Criminological Theory.

Need to Indoctrinate?

This is your book!
Using just enough charting and terminology to be useful, this book is aimed for those schools whose students are just bright enough to absorb information, with just too little education to understand the premises and pretenses of the authors!

Besides a penchant to believe that all arrests prove guilt, the book takes a very anti-citizen view of US law. Perhaps this is just playing to the crowd of would-be blues, but the level of subliminal affirmation to all acts of "policing" is disdainful in my opinion. The intent seems to be to instruct future officers that they and their bosses are unimpeachable, always.

In a book that covers the breadth of crimes available, even to the point of discussion of theoretical tribal "criminal law" 5000 years ago, the lack of any statistics on governmental crime is appalling. 2 pages, in a chapter on White Collar Crime are dedicated to a colorized charting, with very dry, nonspecific discussion of how "corruption" is being globally fought in governments. When compared to the vivid and leading discussion in the remainder of the text, this is a clear subliminal dismissal of the real problems dealt to society when "authorities" act outside or above the law.

Take for instance, this discussion of "Militia," tucked into the "Violent Crimes" chapter between Terrorism, Hate Crimes, and School Shootings;
"Most militia groups are nonviolent. Members have a fondness for wearing battle fatigues, participating in paramilitary maneuvers, and stockpiling firearms."
Ignoring that this describes most police and military members, lets compare the 2 page colorized charting of "corruption".

Placed loosely at the top 3/4 of these 2 pages, with Bankruptcy Fraud and Fraud against Government as the context;
"Countries must rely on the NIS pillars for many things: firm political will to fight corruption; the rule of law; [strong courts], independent anti-corruption agencies; and a law abiding public sector."
Besides how nice it is that our author's circled back to the responsibility for crime is 'public sector', the discussion apparently intends that global governance and private professional contractors are necessary.

Now to be sure, this was text from the Sixth edition, so perhaps it was just an error that lasted through the 5 past editions? And maybe the two intervening versions have lost this bias? And I've got a monument in DC you can get shares in...

Not the complete book!

This book was required for my online Criminology class. The book was great, however, it is only chapters 1 through 14. This is the exact book listed for my course and yet for some reason it does not include chapters 15 through 18. I did not realize it was short until the very end of the course and I had to scramble to find the text elsewhere. It would be nice if the description mentioned that the only place to find the final 4 chapters is in the online instructors version instead of briefly mentioning it on the last page of the index.

About the Author
Pauline Wills is a qualified yoga instructor, reflexologist and colour practitioner and pioneered the integration of colour with reflexology. Her first introduction to the healing power of colour was through yoga and then through the Maitreya School of Colour Healing. Research showed me how important color can be when used during healing. This book explains the applications and uses of color.

My son has had these since birth, given to him by an Aunt and Uncle. I read to him constantly and did phonics with him. He new his alphabet sounds so young. I think these helped him to be able to read at 2 years old. I bought these for a friend and her kids love them.

Great set of books for a level 2 reader. I started teaching my 4 year old reading with the bob books and by 5 he has started reading this Word Family set of book all by himself. The stories are fun and I often see my son laughing out loud. Highly recommend this set.

The war against disease wages on!

Gail Jarrow has a remarkable ability to tell a compelling story, the fact that the story is true makes it all the more interesting. I really enjoyed her previous book, Red Madness, so I was really looking forward to reading this one. I loved this one as well. This book is everything that narrative nonfiction should be, a compelling story, interesting characters, and a challenging problem. Disease has long been a source of great suffering and difficulty and it still is throughout the world. Reading a story like this helps reveal the many who have helped fight the battle against disease, some by choice, and others like Mary Mellon, very unwillingly.

Mary's story is a sad one as she was as much a victim as those she infected, at least until she deliberately chose to ignore the warnings she received when she was released. She had the unfortunate honor of being the first healthy typhoid character identified in the United States. As such, public health officials weren't really sure what to do with her, so they locked her up. She wasn't treated particularly fairly considering the problem wasn't her fault. But her refusal to accept her status as a carrier made things even worse. The challenge of protecting the public's health versus individual rights is one that continues to be fought to this day.

This book is both a fascinating individual story but also a story of the fight against a disease and the people who waged that fight. I can recommend this book to those like myself who find such stories fascinating both the historical aspects as well as the science.

Entertaining writing on a historical disease! (Seriously)

Fatal Fever by Gail Jarrow

Typhoid can be fun.
Did you know that? Let me rephrase.
Reading about typhoid fever can be entertaining.
Better? Much.
Fatal Fever is all about the biology behind typhoid fever, the break down of how it spread, primary sources connecting us to the patients who succumbed to the illness, and a tracking of Typhoid Mary as she continued to unknowingly spread the disease through her work as a cook. As I read this book, I cringed. I chuckled. I gasped. I was even known to say, “I learned more about typhoid in 18 pages of this book than I have in all the other 33 years of my life combined.” Entertaining, straightforward, lots of visuals, and hard to put down. While the chapters are easily digestible, you won’t want to stop reading. I had no idea the depth of the typhoid epidemic and I certainly didn’t have any more than a passing empathy for those who suffered. Typhoid Mary was a name I knew but didn’t possess more than a cursory knowledge of. I highly recommend this book to anyone who:
1. is considering entering the medical or law enforcement professions,
2. is fascinated by historical accounts that are downright well written, or
3. likes to read about American history.
This book (and its predecessor about Scarlet Fever) will be making an entrance to my library this spring.

it reads like a novel

Summary: Everyone’s heard of Typhoid Mary, but who was she really? Uncovering her identity was a medical mystery that began in the summer of 1906. The detective is Dr. George Soper, a sanitation engineer who helped control a typhoid epidemic that swept through the town of Ithaca and Cornell University. When a wealthy family on Long Island was sickened with typhoid, they hired Soper to figure out what had caused the outbreak. He eventually tracked it to Mary Mellon, their former cook. Not only that, but he was able to trace several other outbreaks to her. The book chronicles her capture and confinement on an island off of Manhattan for most of the rest of her life. The reader will also learn about typhoid, its role in history, and how it has gradually been eliminated from most of the western world.

Pros: I had heard of typhoid and Typhoid Mary but knew nothing about it. I was appalled to learn of the lack of sanitation in the U.S. less than a century ago. And I had no idea that such celebrities as Abigail Adams, Wilbur Wright, and Stephen Douglas all died of typhoid. Although this book is nonfiction, it reads like a novel.

Cons: You may find yourself looking askance at your tap water. And you will surely nag your children more to wash their hands
