As a millennial, I'm excited and inspired by this book and author - biggest complaint is Cruz only narrates intro - still great

This book has me more excited and more hopeful about the future than anything else has in a long time, probably ever (granted I'm only in my 20s). The thing that seems to be most lacking almost everywhere I turn, and especially in public arenas (school, news media, social media), is the truth. People are just terrified of speaking the truth (myself regretfully included) for fear of either offending people, of being hated, or of God knows what else. It's as though there are incredibly powerful forces coming from every direction to repress people's willingness and ability to speak their minds when their opinions or questions at all differ or conflict with whatever is officially OK to say and think. Well, Ted Cruz speaks the truth, and he doesn't care how many people hate him or spread malicious lies about him because of it. I have never desperately hoped for something or believed in something as much as I hope for and believe in Ted Cruz as the very best chance we have at restoring the promise of America. If we don't take this golden opportunity now, I don't know what chance we have of ever doing so in the future. It could be very possibly the worst tragedy in human history if we were to allow the dream that is America to be further run into the ground and eventually extinguished, because it truly is the last best hope of the world. I don't care what anyone says, the United States of America has been a force for more good in the world and a source of hope for more people across the world than any other earthly entity that I know of and that I dare say you know of. I truly believe Ted Cruz has been, and will remain, committed to strengthening and expanding the dream of America. Now I better get started on my second read-through before I forget anything I read. You have my full and unwaivering support in this election and the next, Cruz.

Like the man...a little dull, but admirable

I went through many phases as I read this book…. interesting discovery, boredom and finally cheering for the hero. For example, I learned that my preconceived notion of Ted growing up as a preacher's kid was far from the truth. I discovered that he was devoted to his career to ridiculous levels that might have affected his personal relationships if his wife were not just as devoted to both his and her success. Some of this information actually caused me to waiver in my previous inclination of support, because I saw him as lacking balance in life.

The middle of the book is very slow with extensive details on law school events and legal trials, followed by insight into his various campaigns for office. I assume lawyers will be fascinated with the extent of his success at a young age. This part of the book could be considered an informal and impressive resume', should a president be looking for a Supreme Court justice or Attorney General.

But then came the concise summary of his battles that he has fought since becoming a senator from Texas. His strong will and disregard of the norms that have long been established by the political leadership in the Senate were essential. Most freshmen senators quickly sell their vote for committee assignments and power, but he did not. It has been epic and our nation owes both this man and Mike Lee a debt of gratitude for their tenacious fight on our behalf….for the balance of powers, the Constitution and the rule of law in this country! He prepared a report detailing 76 acts of lawlessness by the administration. From issues like drone strikes inside the United States, national sovereignty, right to privacy, right to bear arms, right to political speech, right to freely exercise religion, the FAA ban on travel to Israel, property ownership, amnesty by proclamation, Obamacare.....Ted Cruz has been fighting to limit government and help us to retain our liberty. More importantly, he has been involved in a legal slugfest to halt the attempted transformation of this country.

I would recommend A Time for Truth to anybody who has lost ...

It’s getting harder and harder to say I don’t believe in the supernatural with all these ghost writers in the autobiography field. That is why A Time for Truth: Reigniting the Promise of America shocked me. Not only because the national media’s view of Cruz is debunked, but mainly because Cruz is a rarity in today’s political realm. A man who stands for his beliefs and refuses to just be another cog in the Washington Machine. I would recommend A Time for Truth to anybody who has lost faith in Congress or the America Dream. Cruz proves he is more than Green Eggs and Ham, he is the right man to lead Uncle Sam.

Another exciting sci-fi thriller!

Really enjoyed this sci-fi thriller. I love how Daniel develops the characters as they face adversity. While this is the first in a series, the ending did not leave me frustrated that I have to wait for the next book. I am looking forward to reading the next in the series when it comes out, but wasn't left hanging. He delves in to the characters and the story line quickly and caught my interest so that I wanted to see what would happen next and how the characters would handle their challenges and personal demons (and a "real" one, too...you'll understand if you read the book) and grow to be better. It's the classic good vs. evil, and while the individual "good" guys are far from perfect, I found myself cheering for them and hoping they'd succeed. Daniel has once again written a book that I can easily see myself reading again, one that leaves me wanting more, but not frustrated that I have to wait.

Good fun read, over cute at times but a easy, short, entertaining read.

This book was a good quick read. The plot is basically a handful of misfits, some humans, others various creatures that find themselves unwillingly in a common battle for survival on an outdated spaceship. Due to monetary needs they are forced to become Alien Hunters to get enough credits to purchase fuel, provisions etc. The characters are a bit over done but it is all in good fun though It does try to be over cute and could have left the Romey Demon character out because it was just pure childishness, nonsense that added zero to the story. I wondered if the author was trying to reach out to 5 year olds and parts of the book. That is how low grade the writing gets at times. But I knew the book wasn't long so I treked on and did enjoy the book overall. This book was offered for free as many first novels are from unknown authors who want you to buy the next book. Also this book is a complete stand alone story, which I appreciated, nothing worst than any book that isn't.

I was lucky enough to pick this book up for free and what a fun read it was! One part Star Wars, a dash of Wizard of Oz, a large dollop of Hitchhiker, a pinch of Fifth Element, just a taste of Star Trek, all mixed well with a brilliant imagination and you have one whale of a good space adventure! I'm looking forward to their continuing escapades as the series rolls on.

Great, just a little expensive

John Kingdon attempts to answer very difficult questions in his work "Agendas, Alternatives, and Public Policies." What makes an idea's time come? What makes people in and around government attend to some subjects and not to others? In short, Kingdon explores how ideas become policy in his 1994 award-winning book.
The book makes many interesting conclusions, as Kingdon uses scientific research methods to discuss how ideas become policy. It is amazing that Kingdon is able to quantify how influential certain groups are to policy formulation and implementation. In doing this, he looks at the influence of groups in and outside of government. Kingdon then goes onto his major two concepts of the policy primeval soup and the political stream. Both of these are wonderful illustrations of how policymaking happens.
In the end, this is a great book for public policy students. My only complaint is that Kingdon is oftentimes too wordy. It seems that he could have written a much more effective piece by summing it up in a 40-page journal article. In any event, the book is worth the read, even if some chapters are only skimmed.

Good theory, easy to read

Kingdon has produced an innovative and useful theory of the policy process. This book is clearly not intended for the lay reader, but for political scientists and policy specialists interested in theorizing about policy formation.

Kingdon's writing style is somewhat formal, and at times stiff, but the book is easy to get through. Kingdon provides many concrete examples of the ideas he discusses, making the abstract principles easier to understand.

Recommended for classes on the policy process, especially in conjunction with Baumgarter and Jones' Agendas and Instability in American Politics.

Misleading Title + Interesting Approach, but Clear Drawbacks

NOTE: This is a "reprint" *NOT* a the claimed 2nd Edition. The "2nd Edition" is apparently a marketing ploy.

That said...

PROS:

1) Expressions are written in *real Japanese*: All the Japanese expressions in the book are presented in real Japanese (kanji and all). ** pronunciation is given in romji (western alphabet used to represent Japanese), which I think leads to bad Japanese pronunciation, but the author uses a special, codified form of romaji to try to convey the Japanese "tonal accent". ** I get the author's plan, but think it is counter productive as tonal accent isn't that important (different regions of Japan have different tonal patterns anyhow). Monotone is just fine as, due to the utterly massive number of homonyms in Japanese, context is usually what determines what meaning a sound-pattern is representing anyhow. Ditching Romaji completely and instead including an Audio CD would have been *much* better.

2) Conjugations: Japanese is *all* about verbs; a verb all by itself can be a complete sentence. You modify verbs to add "nuance".
For example: tabeRU: eat, tabeNAI: don't eat, tabeTAI: want to eat, tabeTAKUNAI: don't want to eat, ETC.
This book presents a lot of this verb modifications clearly, with several examples, and in a compact location.

3) Flow charts: I imagine that the usefulness of these will vary from person to person. Personally, I don't think that they are remotely critical, but they are interesting and could help certain types of learners.

CONS:

1) BIG CON - no casual speech!!! This book is all about semi-formal business speech. Most books start with this (in my opinion this is a flawed) approach of presenting semi-formal Japanese first and then later covering more casual Japanese -- however this book never covers casual Japanese.
This is big problem for several reasons:
A) 85%+ of real Japanese (what you'll hear on the street, TV, Movies, around the house, during after-work drinks, etc) will be casual Japanese.
B) Advanced Japanese is based on the building blocks of casual Japanese - this applies even to advanced semi-formal Japanese. Example structure of an advance Japanese statement: casual-phrase + link + casual phrase + link + semi-formal ending. So *MOST* Japanese actual requires knowledge of casual speech.
C) If you can only speak semi-formal Japanese, people will feel that you are stiff... and eventually might actually come to view you as rude. They will ultimately expect you to speak with them more casually, in order to show that you are feeling closer kinship to them.
Bottom line: Casual Speech is extremely important to both "getting along" in Japan, and to being able to progress to advanced Japanese.

2) No Audio - Listening to a foreign language is the key to learning how to properly speak a foreign language. And while the author has come up with a clever modified-romaji system to try and visualize the pronunciation, it forces the brain to have to try to digest Japanese, translate the modified-romaji system into some sort of sound structure, comprehend the grammar, etc - all simultaneously. Brains don't tend to like that much processing. I simple audio CD would have been a better, and more accurate way to address the issue that the author was trying to solve.

How I would use this book:
I wouldn't use this as your sole study source. I would use this as a secondary text to help learn more complex verb-form combinations.

Good book, but needs to be used with other books in order to be successful

It really is a good beginner's to intermediate reference and study book. I've been using it with Japanese Demystified, which is more like a workbook. Together, they work very well. This one covers more words than Demystified, but doesn't have the writing and reading practice that Demystified does. If you're a newbie to Japanese, you might want something a little bit more basic than this one, but if you have had a little bit of Japanese, this one along with any sort of Japanese workbook sort of text will help you a lot.

Not What I Was Expecting

I bought this looking for a better way to learn Japanese. The book itself is nifty. It is a paperback and is large. The readability is nice. However, I find it difficult to really get into the actual learning. There are vocabulary words all over the thing and they happen somewhat haphazardly within each section. You don't get through reading about one "lesson" without picking up at least another 50 words or more that are new to you. These words are never reintroduced later for practice. The whole thing is also written in English with a lot of romanji cluttering it up. There is no practical learning of the kata other than through the spread out vocab lists that give you either the kana + romanji or the kanji + romanji. It was really disappointing. I still enjoy it, however, because it makes a nice addition to my collection and has some value to it as a learning aid.

A great read for "Wonder" fans

I purchased this book for my 12-year-old nephew and he was very excited to read it. One of his favorite books was "Wonder" by R.J. Palacio and this book expands on some of the characters found in that book. This book is not a sequel, it's not meant to pick up where "Wonder" left off, but instead tells the stories of three of Auggie Pullman's friends. The Auggie that kids fell in love with in "Wonder" appears in each story, but as a minor character. I think anyone who enjoyed "Wonder" will want to read this book.

Auggie and Me is an important book about tolerance, kindness, and doing what is right in the face of adversity. It could benefit every middle school child. It is supportive for children who are perceived as "different" from other. All the children in my family have read it and as an adult I thought it was creatively and sensitively written as well as being realistic.

This is a great companion book for anyone who has read "Wonder" by RJ Palacio. My 10 year old son loved reading the other characters' points of view about Auggie. This is a great way for children to learn about how sometimes people who act bad or uncaring do it for reasons you could have never guessed. I recommend this book to anyone with tweens as they begin to experience some of life's ups and downs because it will help them have some perspective and understand the concept of "walking a mile in someone else's shoes" before judging them.

Don't waste your money!!!

I would give this book zero stars if I could. First, as someone who has struggled with digestive issues for years, I have read many books on the subject of eating right as we age. There is nothing new in this book that has already been said. Unfortunately, in some of the areas, he gets so technical that it becomes tedious. Second, I am a very healthy eater to begin with, but even I couldn't follow his plan. His diet is SO specific and I live in a very small town. I can't even get my hands on half of the ingredients he mentions. And then, the worst part for me is that he really pushes his shake formula. To me, the book turned into a big commercial, trying to convince me to buy his products. If you are looking for a workable plan, this isn't it. I can't even imagine how anyone with a full time job would be able to keep up with the food preparation. Save yourself the money and find something more reasonable!

Don't bother to buy!

This book has a lot of good information which was not new but was compiled in one place. OK. But throughout the book, the author continually emphasizes that in order to get the benefit of the information, you need to do his 2 week revitalizing program. Well a lot of books push their own programs. What upset me about this book was that the program requires you to purchase products from the author and if you did purchase all the products needed to implement the program, you would have to spend hundreds of dollars. So the whole book really doesn't have any new information and in essence is an infomercial for his ridiculously expensive supplements and shakes. Terrible tactic!

Nothing new regarding wheat/carb effects.

I read lots of books on better eating; nothing new for me in this book. Same ole info. I still like Wheat Belly best but could be because it was my first read on the topic of eliminating wheat from diet. I feel the book was written to help Dr. Lipman sell his products.
